Fire Escapes - The south, east and north sides of the school were equipped with fire escapes in 1948.  

  For those of us who attended first grade at St. John's, that means these were installed 8 years before

  you got to first grade.  Remember those monthly fire drills?  "Boys keep your eyes down".  In the 1980's

  they were declared structurally unsafe and the exit doors were sealed.  As a precaution and for liability

  reasons, the lower sections were removed to keep the neighbor kids from playing on them.
